Big brain thought for the night. Prior to coronavirus, the US was in the midst of an opium epidemic that was widespread enough to lower our national life expectancy. How does that ongoing opium epidemic (addiction doesn’t stop just because there’s a virus going around) play into the mortality rate of coronavirus?

No answer, but it does make me wonder how much harder it is in this time of lockdowns for addicts to get their fix of any drug. Or for supply lines to fill demand.

This is a couple years old, but I recall @ 20% got their pills from someone else. With non essential Appointments and people avoiding hospitals, I’d be curios if there isn’t a spike in heroin / Fentonal all as people look for their fix somewhere else

If anything it’d be easier. Hospitals are laying off nurses and doctors in places without outbreaks. They still have to pay their mortgages. My sister (nurse) had a coworker busted right before this thing hit. In AZ we had actually pharmaceutical companies acting like drug cartels. My wife commented on how the drivers have gotten worse since our “ quarantine”. I hypothesized it’s because the only people driving around are high and getting a resupply.

It’s complicated, and more than just about lung function. It takes into account multiple risk factors.

Not really that complicated at all according to that article. Opioids act on the brainstem to lower respiration rate. This corona virus attacks the lungs. Lower respiration rate mixed with compromised lung function means you’re gonna die.

My coworker, who lives in a nice neighborhood about 1 mile away from mine , had a shooting in their neighborhood a couple weeks ago. Another coworker who lives in DC near the Navy Yard (an up and coming, recently gentrified part of the city) had a house in their neighborhood get hit by a stray bullet. In both cases it was due to disputes over drug deliveries.
I guess using a firearm counts as “contactless delivery ”, right?

I wasn’t thinking about honest people turning to distribution. That could indeed be a problem.
But hey, time for a story. It’s my sister in law’s, but I love it. She’s a country vet, but even in farm country, there is still a criminal element looking for street drugs. One day several years back she came to work to find someone had broken in to the back entrance and rifled through the dispensary looking for drugs. They took all the oxytocin.
Reading is fundamental.

Wonder which would be the easiest to spot in a lineup, their improved profile or the fact that they’ll get emotional during questioning.
